Pillows go yellow for the same reason mattresses do: sweat, hair oil, face creams and dribble soak through the pillowcase night after night. In humid New Farm summers it happens faster. Pillow cleaning is often added to a mattress booking, though you can book it on its own. We give you upfront pricing on the phone and book a nearby independent crew.
The crew sorts pillows by filling before starting. Polyester and microfibre pillows handle moisture well. Feather and down pillows need lighter moisture and a longer drying time so the filling does not clump. Memory foam and latex pillows cannot go in a washing machine, which is why many people book them for an in-home clean instead.
- Pillowcases and protectors removed for your own wash
- Vacuum pass on both sides and along the seams
- Yellow marks and spots treated by hand
- Low-moisture extraction suited to the filling
- Pillows stood up or laid on a rack to dry
Pillows are small, so they dry faster than a mattress, especially in the sun on a verandah or balcony. Foam pillows take the longest because the core holds moisture. The crew tells you which pillows should be ready by bedtime and which may need an extra afternoon. Plan a spare pillow or two for the first night just in case.
Very old pillows with thin, lumpy filling may not be worth cleaning, and the crew will say so if they think a new pillow makes more sense. Using a zip-up pillow protector and washing it often helps keep cleaned pillows fresher.
